In This Moment

“This is weird,” I laugh, spreading the linen napkin over my lap as Vesna moves about the table serving up a breakfast that is large enough to feed about ten people. I think she’s excited to have someone to cook for again–even if it’s only temporary.

Abigail smiles, a rosy glow on her cheeks, as she sits across from me and spoons some fruit salad and yogurt into her mouth. “It is, isn’t it? I feel like I’m pretending to be a grown up.”

I look around the large dining room of The Manor. It represents a multitude of awkward meals from years gone by. But my favorite memories are the ones of the last summer here with Abigail when we would steal glances at each other across the table and touch feet underneath.

Gabe runs through the room and climbs up on a chair, his eyes wide when he sees all of the food before him.

“I not know what you like,” Vesna informs him. “So I make a little of everything for you to choose.”

“Pancakes,” he whispers, a huge tiny-toothed grin on his face, as he pushes his curls out of his eyes and waits for Vesna to fill his plate and pour over some syrup. She cuts it up into bite sized pieces then presents him with a fork.

“Thank you,” he says.

She ruffles his hair. “Such manners. We will be good friends.”

“How did you sleep in your new room, buddy?” I ask him, as he fills his cheeks with cubes of pancake.

“Good!” he says around his food.

“Was your bed comfy?” Abi asks. He looks at her and nods.

We continue our simple banter, and a decision is made to spend the day hanging out by the pool. I give Abigail a knowing smile.

“You know, I was worried that coming back here would just remind me of all the bad times I spent in this massive house. But it doesn’t, everywhere I look, I’m reminded of you.”

She reaches across the table and touches my hand. “Me too.”

Gabe watches us and giggles, covering his face as if he’s embarrassed. “You love each other,” he says.

Abigail reaches over and touches his round cheeks. “Yes, we do. And we also love you.”

The comment seems to please him and he smiles, returning to his food with gusto, until his plate is empty and he rushes off, calling for Louisa as he yells about the pool.

“Oh god, do you know how long it’s been since I’ve just lounged about for an entire day? I feel like a teenager again,” Abigail says, as she stretches out beside the pool on a navy chaise lounge. She wears a wide brimmed hat and large glasses to protect her face. But she wears a small red bikini that shows off the tiny mound of her stomach perfectly. I think she looks beautiful, and I reach across and place my hand on her abdomen, gently stroking up and down over the curve of her belly.

“Get used to it. You won’t have to work again once those documents are finalized.
